You know, I don't know if I ever asked him to stop drinking. I mean, I don't think we kids could have gotten him to stop, but we could have tried. He probably feels badly enough about it, but asking him could have helped...well, made him feel as bad as we did.

The deaths of his best friends due to smoking and/or drinking-related diseases didn't stop him. He did try from time to time, like when he had to find his best friend and bartender dead two weeks after he had died...
